Happy Earth Day
22 ways you can look after the planet
on and after the 22nd April
1. Have at least one plant-based day a week
2. Walk or use public transport when possible
3. Do a plastic audit, go through the house and see what plastic you have that can be reused or recycled to avoid getting anymore. 5 plastic water bottles & 6 tupperware boxes means saving money & the environment by not buying any more.
4. Ask your office to switch to Our Earth paper. Our Earth paper supports the Durrell Trust Foundation to save animals from extinction
5. Keep a reusable bag in your car or handbag to save plastic
6. Ask your pension fund what they invest in, this is a great way to stay in control of most people’s largest investment fund
7. Have separate bins in the kitchen for rubbish, recycling & food waste.
8. Switch to ethical chocolate - companies like Tony’s, Doisy & Dam and Coop own brand chocolate pay fairer wages, avoid palm oil and use environmental practises
9. Make stock from vegetable peelings for cooking
10. Grow your own herbs and veggies, this is great way to teach kids about food and gardening
11. Use reusable coffee pods in your coffee machine for your morning joe
12. Avoid fast fashion - repair clothing, buy second hand, host swap parties, buy from charity shops or use Vinted, Facebook Marketplace etc.
13. Drink loose tea, the plastic in tea bags takes years to break down. Is there anything fancier than a teapot for an afternoon brew. Alternatively PG Tips have biodegradable tea bags available.
14. Use companies that encourage refills rather than brand new: Splosh, Lush, The Body Shop
15. Look for places that offer recycling for electrical or technical products. We offer a few different services https://www.tannas.co.uk/recycling-service
16. Turn it off: make sure plugs and lights are switched off when not in use. Timer plugs or smart plugs are a great way to schedule appliances being turned off when not in use.
17. Use reusable cotton cloths instead of single use wipes, kitchen roll & face wipes.
18. Have your food shop delivered: getting it delivered saves 20 cars going to do the food shop individually
19. Work from home one day a week (where possible) to help reduce emissions
20. Bring out the slow cooker: it’s a great way to preserve energy and have a delicious meal do the heavy lifting for you.
21. Keep it local, buy from local shops and businesses to save air miles and impact to the environment. This also helps give jobs to small business and family businesses like ours.
22. Share this blog so that everyone does a little bit more this earth day to help look after our beautiful home, planet earth.
