What types of electric heaters are there?
Electric:
These are the lightest and most portable, they heat up quickly
and are ideal if you’re looking to warm a smaller space quickly.
They normally require minimal setup and can be plugged in
straight after unpackaging. However, they can be quite noisy.
Convector Heater:
These tall, thin and light babies are fairly easy to move around the house.
They heat up quickly like the electric heaters, but are usually quieter.
They can be mounted on to walls, which is great for keeping them
out of the way. Instructions and brackets are normally found in the box.
Oil-filled heater:
If saving money on running costs is your top priority, these
are the ones for you. They can be slow to heat up and are
heavy compared to their electric and convector heater
compadres. If in the market for one of these, look out
for one with wheels for additional portability.
What sort of budget is needed for a middle of the range heater?
There is a pretty wide range in terms of budget, from a tenner
for a small basic one to over £300 for advanced models.
For portable models - you’ll find plenty of choice in the £20-£80 range.
What features should I look out for?
Fan heater timer switch:
Great for setting it up to start before waking up or turning
off just after you’ve headed to bed. Some include a frost
protection, which enables the heater to auto switch on if the
temperature drops below 5 degrees.
Cold air setting:
Great 2-in-1 option for the summer and a perfect space
saver for small offices or flats. They’re not as effective as air
conditioners, but works for small spaces.
Fan Heater climate control:
This nifty feature will mean the heater will get up to the
desired temperature and then maintain it. Saving precious
time playing up and down on the heater

How much do electric heaters cost to run?
Costs can be low for running heaters, a 3kW heater at max
power for one hour will use 3kW costing 49.2p to run.
As a general rule, the higher the power: the more expensive to run.
But if you use a high powered heater to warm up the room then switch it
off, that will be cheaper than a heater that takes longer to heat up.
The quickest to heat up a room are around 10 mins and the longers are 30+ mins.
Are heaters dangerous?
It goes without saying, heaters get hot! But as long as you use
them according to their instructions, they are safe appliances.
Most have a type of handle and shut off features - in case they get
dangerously hot. Never place anything on,
or cover up a heater as it will significantly increase the fire risk.
Some heaters also have a ‘tilt protection’ heater - so that they
switch themselves off if they tip over. It’s really worth considering
that option with dogs or little kids around.
You’ve got looks, you’ve got style!
Heaters aren’t always the prettiest of appliances but in
recent years there has been a bigger appetite for features.
